About The Book

The constant noise of contemporary life makes it easy to miss the most profound message the world has ever known: Jesus loves you. Innovative teachers Craig Gross and Jason Harper will separate the religious from the real as they show how this simple truth is worth our undivided attention. The authors weave Jesus' narrative with their own stories of serving among the "least of these" in this inspiring summons to world-changing faith. Join them as they encounter shut-ins, drunks, inmates, porn stars, and others while striving to follow Christ in their daily lives.

Westboro Baptist Church Video and Book Review

by craig gross on Sun, Sep 6th 09 at 11:23AM

When we were at Westboro in Topeka last Sunday, we gave them a few copies of the book. Margie said she would gladly review it. The review is posted below the video that we put together from last week:

Critique of Jesus Loves You this I know by craig gross and jason harper
By Westboro Baptist Church

This “book” is a collection of perverse platitudinous probably-plagiarized ditties designed to cast off the bonds which the good laws and statutes of God impose on the human heart.  The "authors" went into the bowels of this dark-hearted nation, and pulled forth some of the most motley grungy rebellious proud sinners and chronicled their misery.  News flash girls: You live a life utterly contrary to all your Creator has told you to do and – no flippin’ duh – you’re miserable!  This life is vanity; it’s laden with misery; and if you focus all your energies sowing to the flesh, and ignoring the spirit and your duty to God, of course you’ll be miserable.  The only hope for people in that mess – as well as the power-mongering wealthy fancier proud sinners of doomed-america (from the least to the greatest) – is the truth.  Obey God and he will bless you; disobey him and he will curse you, in every way, every day, in this life and after.  Unless you tell your fellow man to obey God and rebuke him for his sin, you hate him.  So – like all the rest of the lying whore false prophets of this nation – of whatever brand of poison – craig and jason hate their fellow man.  They offer this sappy-floppy-pretend-love for one reason only – to make the bucks!

These two joel olsteen wannabies (craig and jason) made a lazy lightweight effort to mimic joel’s theology-of-lust-and-greed, in the hopes they’ll cash in on some of his millions.  They rightly perceive this is a generation that wants a submissive cotton candy goddess to serve, one who will let them live in any proud sin and pretend they can go to heaven.  Upon perceiving that there was gold in the hills of this nation’s sinful rebellion, with slack jaws and sparkling-with-idol-worship eyes, they set about to form their own brand of feel-good junk-food theology.  It’s a sugary twist on a high-octane-level-sugar diet.  Bor-ing.

Jesus loves his elect, and only his elect.  Those people – called a remnant (some of whom have been alive on this earth since the dawn of creation) – have attributes and descriptors, all found in the Bible.  (That’s the book craig and jason use as a prop similar to how Shirley Phelps-Roper used their dung-digest as a paper-weight.)  The attributes of God’s elect are obedience, meekness, fear of God, and a broken and contrite heart.  Those whom Jesus loves (his joint-heirs in glory) have a courageous testimony before their generation; the whole world knows and hates them.  Their descriptors are poor, needy, widow and fatherless.  Those elegant Bible words weren’t sufficient for the spiritual-slob-fest of craig and jason.  So they made up new words, coming out of their black hearts, in sharp conflict with the Scriptures, appealing to the masses, and sadly for those two lassies – utterly abhorrent to God and the very words that will condemn their souls to everlasting punishment.  Sucks to be craig and jason!  Now into the trash the “book” goes.  (Smile.)

I have to say, I am a little disappointed you gave them your book for review. I'm sure your intentions were good, but this is only giving them publicity and it reflects poorly on you, as if you are looking to stir up trouble to promote sales.

For some reason I feel like I am back in Jr. High School again with all the insults and name calling. It makes me laugh!

wow...lol..."joel osteen wannabes"...wow...if they really knew scripture...nice try...and this gives hyper-calvinism another muddy-puddle...

Wow. That's all i can really say. Wow. But the joel osteen wannabes was pretty funny.

So Craig and Jason hate their fellow man and are only in it for the money. If that were true they are certainly in the wrong profession :) I think if I wrote a book I would want Westboro to write a review just like this one. If they liked my book that would be a problem. Great review

wow. craig and jason keep up the Good Work. we will just continue to love on and pray for the people at westboro church...because Love changes all.

Jennifer, if you've followed XXXministries enough, you should know better than that! Craig and Jason are about showing love to all people, they saw an opportunity to show the love of Christ where there was hate, and they seized that opportunity. From what I understand their intentions weren't to give them the book to review but to read through and hopefully spark something in their hate filled hearts.

I think the point is though, that Truth speaks for itself. If their actions "reflect poorly" then so be it, but I think the Truth of Christ's love and their good intentions will shine through regardless. There's always a critic, but that doesn't mean you don't do what's on your heart and what God has called you to because of what other people might think.

Anyways, this is really long, sorry! Keep doing what you're doing Craig and Jason!

Wow. There definitely is truth is what Margie is saying here but it is spoken with the pure "Just" part of God's character with non of the "Love/Gracious" part of his character. She says "You live a life utterly contrary to all your Creator has told you to do and – no flippin’ duh – you’re miserable! This life is vanity; it’s laden with misery; and if you focus all your energies sowing to the flesh, and ignoring the spirit and your duty to God, of course you’ll be miserable. " This is truth, the people groups Craig and his ministry are trying to reach need to hear this truth and turn from their ways but I think this truth need to be spoken in love (Eph 4:15 "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.") I haven't read this book but I am sure that the Theology of it isn't ultra deep and wordy, my guess is that Craig and co. are attempting to reach out to these groups with an open hand in attempts at beginning relationships with them, and I am all for this. The danger comes when we leave out the truth God's judgement and his hate against sin. I think seeds will be planted though this book but true salvation and deliverance will not come unless the complete Gospel is laid out, displaying not only God's great love for us and his desire to be in relationship with us through Christ but also his hatred of sin. Craig's approach comes across of that of Grace and Love. I pray that that love draws people near and the the complete Gospel is shared.

Margie's approach is that of pure Judgement, I have a strong feeling that that won't draw people near and that the complete Gospel is not being shared.

-Drew (One of the "elect" who used to watch porn, sleep around, waste his money on cars and possessions, and curse at God until he was shown the Gospel though love)

Craig,

I'm glad you posted this. I think it reinforced the message of you're book. Jesus loves Westboro as well, even when their hilariously wrong! (:

I'm not really suprised by the content of the review. I guess I had some hope that they would respond to love. My heart hurts for Westboro.

OK... they can have their own opinions. I will not judge them but will still pray for them. Keep up the good work.

Jennifer
09.05.09

Yes I have followed XXX for quite a while and think they are doing a wonderful work in an area that is far too neglected (i was the first to post).

It is my respect for the integrity of their work that caused me to be suprised to see this review POSTED by them on the web...I am neither a sheeple, NOR a critic of that ministry.

The hatred Westboro spews does not deserve one ounce of attention.
I DO think it is great that someone is willing to reach out to the people at Westboro.

Andy Unnerstall

It certainly takes a humble heart to condemn the world and declare yourself the "elect." It's a good thing they've gotten that one covered.

09.05.09

I just don't get their (Westboro) beliefs?! How does someone get to heaven according to them? Is it just going to consist of their family members? It's really sad that they are so brain washed by their own thoughts!
Glad you guys are trying to reach out to the lost and broken, maybe it will sink in one day.

09.05.09

...I really hoped the opposite for this person(s) but alas, my hope were dashed to the ground...and stomped on at that! :(
These people are so blind, they believe that their dung they spill is the truth, "Obviously": they have "NOT" read the bible in it's entirety or they would repent of this that they teach and stop following false prophets in their ranks.

Well, this gives to more praying for God to break down the walls of brainwashing and for them to use their intelect as God gave each and every one of them to think for them selves on a reality level.

Thanks for sharing. :)

Only WBC can put a sick spin on this kind of good work...We need to love them and pray for them and at the same time realize they are run by satan's minions. I always get a kick out of how they claim to be prophets or something of these days but you will never hear them cite scripture. The closest they come to quoting the Word is telling someone to go read a bible....Sad group really.

Joe
09.05.09

I think you guys are wasting your time with these people. I think it's great that you went there to their church and that you gave them your book and all, but you're giving them even more of what they want, and that is coverage on your website. they just want to be seen and heard, and the best thing is to just shut them off and shut them out.

Westboro, You should be utterly ashamed of yourselves. How can you spew such hate, and contempt toward others. Jesus' two commandments were to love God and love people. You are no different from the world when you spew hate. These two men and their ministry have done more to further the kingdom, then most people even dream about. Their level of compassion is unsurpassed. If Jesus were physically on earth today, He would be reaching the lost, the outcast, the marginalized, just like he did when He walked the earth. Hate does nothing to spread the love of Jesus.

Wow, wow, wow. I am shocked at this review. If Margie represents the "elect," we're all in trouble. No wonder Christianity is so misunderstood...

oh my wow....that's why I love this country the USA. God bless the USA. our freedom of speech really works(as long as it's still in the context of our constitution)...westboro still we love you...and Jesus loves you more...this we know. Jason and Craig thank you for including also the westboro on your book.Continue to love them as how you love the other "colorful" people in Jesus name. Let me say this: what a shame even to myself(which I experienced) that I know a lot of theology and theological jargons and countless Biblical memory verses since a child but my pagan and idolatrous neighbors know how to love other people of different backgrounds than me.....what a shame, shame on me then.....

09.05.09

What a spectacular demonstration of Matthew 21:31: "Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. "

And the kooky idea of the ancient remnant "some of whom have been alive on this earth since the dawn of creation" ... wonder where they are? Is Fred Phelps one of them?

Craig and gang ... you offered love where you knew it could not be accepted. When face to face these people were all smiles....even when they were spouting off their mantras they couldn't keep a smile off of their face. Perhaps you chipped a piece of their heart ... who knows. But even if not ... God bless you for trying.

I found a few things interesting here. First off, as someone who has not read the book I know nothing more about it then I did before I read this. If this was a book review then why does it focus more on trashing the people who wrote it more then on what the book says or is about? It makes me question if you even read it yourself. Secondly, as Jesus once said "Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets."(Luke 6:26) So in my eyes this review stands as proof that they are doing something right. And as someone greatly blessed by their ministry I agree. But I have taken much of your time so I will end with this. "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."(Ephesians 4:29)

John

And some seed fell on stoney ground...
Out of the mouth the heart speaks. The sheer vitriol reveals that the reviewer has some heart issues. The comments go way beyond a negative review to gleeful viciousness. It may have helped if they slept on it before hitting the post button. Or maybe not.

Hey Guys, I'm unsure what to say. As someone who can preach repentance and holiness with the best of them please let me share that I personally enjoy what God is doing through you. I am delighted to testify as to the healing and forgiveness that only a few days of looking over the heart of your ministry and discovering that Jesus Loves Me, This I know!

I do not for the life of me understand how these people can call themselves Christian when they hate as much as they do. I was hoping something in the book would trigger a positive emotion from these Westboro people. I guess not. I have read the book, and am writing my review... I am not slamming anyone!

Amazing how conflicting the rational of LOVE and whom you SHOULD LOVE?

Whom should WESTBORO LOVE?

Do they make a weekly LIST?

If I understand the review correctly WESTBORO has RULES about LOVE.

To ACCEPT or NOT TO ACCEPT LOVE?

Ok, What would Jesus do?

I think it's pretty cool that youcould reach out to people whom it'd be so easy to turn away from... Unfortunately, this type of hate is so brainwashed into them I'm not sure that there is anyway to get thru to them.... But love that you are loving enough to try.

So, does this mean that both of the authors and xxx church welcome gay people and support the equality for them to marry?

If so, this really helps bring me closer to god.

If not, it saddens me...

Yeh. Totally. If those guys had liked the book, that would be something to worry about. Well done Craig and Jason for upsetting a bunch of ignorant bigots who would be forming the KKK a hundred or so years ago. Jesus loves me. Jesus loves you. God hates hate.

Isn't it a pretty low debate technique to use WBC to promote your viewpoint on homosexuality? listen here: http://jdfk-kefas.blogspot.com/2009/07/intervju-med-shirley-phelps-roper-fran.html Todd Friel interview with Shirley Phelps, without compromising with Scripture- still pointing out the lack of love (and their errors) in their message/teachings.

John 8:36 "So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed"

Brandon Stuart
09.06.09

I wasn't trying to use a debate technique... I was excited about possibly funding a place that I fit in and people that I could worship with.

I agree that god loves all, and was trying to find out how alligned with that message the authors of thus book were before I purchased it.

I always say that those that have a obsession in a certain area probably suffer from it... I can only pray that Fred Phelps and his family find help from their homosexual and hate addictions.

09.07.09

I agree with Jennifer the first post. I have been following XXXChurch for quite some time now, and I love the ministry, but this trip to Westboro really confused me. In videos and the tweets, I saw Craig refer to them as nuts, and seemingly egging them on, trying to get a rise out of them. The porn stars were treated better than the people at WBC. I am slightly disappointed in the way Craig and Jason handled them, with more of a mocking tone, than love.

I realize I wasn't there, and I didn't see everything, but publicly, this is what I saw. WBC is sad and heartbreaking, not a joke to give the rest of us entertainment.

Well if it's not about debate technique (to promote your point of view), it have to be about to stir up trouble to promote sales, and isn't that against your own ethics (merchandise/work for Christ to gain economical success)?

Joe
09.07.09

I didn't feel like the interview at WBC was inappropriate. Craig and Jason acted appropriately in my opinion.

I still feel like time spent with these people is a waste. all you have to do is listen to any of the interviews that Shirley does with anybody, and you can tell that they have no desire to consider other people's opinions ideas or facts for that matter. they efficiently dodge every thing that could possibly be used to prove a point against them. every chance they get they literally scream about how filthy america is and how it is doomed to hell, but then they go on to say that unless you're part of the elect, that you dont' even have the ability to repent. they just talk themselves in circles, and yet accuse anybody who doesn't think the way they do of doing the same. they're blind, dumb, and are causing a lot of damage in America.

That's all I've got to say about that.

09.08.09

May the TRUE JESUS OF THE BIBLE will come to save you. Amen.

09.09.09

i love the ministry of craig gross and i posted about it at my site: http://essentialrisk.wordpress.com/2009/09/09/love/

09.09.09

Did she like the book? She never really said..just saying!

Jesus Loves the Brainwashed! There is hope for the Phelps family.
One of my favorite verses in the bible is 1 John 4:7-8 Dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves had been born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, because GOD IS LOVE..
Great book guys! I have read it 3 times and passed it on to my parents to read.

most of the comments on here are not very loving or accepting. what gives you the right to say that the authors are not loving ? you have no right to judge someone's heart that is God's job.

That is awesome. There is such a huge benefit for us to be exposed to both groups. Most Christians, no matter how they deliver their message and relate to others, should take note of the intelligent arguments and Bible knowledge at Westboro. It should be a challenge to us all to understand their side, be able to clearly refute their arguments, and do so in an intelligent and loving presentation. I find their existence a great example of what nonbelievers hate about religion. Learn to speak well against their arguments, and you'll have a solid presentation of the true "good news".

I wonder if she realizes that the Bible wasn't written in English, so therefore "Bible talk" that she wants to hear so much is just a translation, not the message itself.

I did enjoy in the video how that lady did seem like she ended up enjoying their company before the day was over. Even though it may not seem like it, our expressions of love can make a difference.

One final thought.. I can't imagine how anyone who has ever read through the book of John could not believe God doesn't love sinners. What kind of life would it be if we were created to hate everyone. I'm glad God created us for so much more..

My heart hurts for westboro I cant help but cry when I see them and see that they are putting these children in danger i have watched some news reports about the children and to hear such filth come out of a child just hurts my heart I dont understand. I am so impressed with these boys having such courage to go and tell westboro about Gods love and the blessings he brings all of us. I just wish westboro could see that the BIBLE isnt meant to be a rule book but to be a tool book to guide us through life to get us through tough times to help us in any situation. Christ loves you all westboro I just pray with all my heart you see that one day.
